Without access to nutritious food, children suffer physically, mentally and emotionally. Access to food for our children isn’t sufficient, and when available, extremely simple. A child’s general diet lacks the most basic nutrients and variety of food. A typical breakfast includes tea and two biscuits, and lunch only rice and Dahl (peas). Other vegetables are a rarity, and a dish as simple as chicken broth is prepared only on special occasions with just 15 chickens to prepare for 450 children.

Due to lack of resources, the children’s diets do not provide sufficient nutrition outlined by the Fijian dietary guidelines mandated by the National Food and Nutrition Centre of the Ministry of Health. Eating a variety of foods helps ensure children receive adequate nutrients for proper growth and development.

To enable us to provide for the daily, year-round nutritional needs of the 450 children of St. Vincent, we are in great need of donations. A donation of just $.50 a day can supply a child with the daily food and nutrition they so dearly need to grow and develop properly. Please donate today.

The guidelines state to meet sufficient dietary and nutritional needs it is essential to eat a variety of foods within the 3 food groups every day:

  • 5 servings a day of health-centric foods such as fruits, vegetables and herbs to help protect the body from diseases and promote wellness.
  • Half of every meal should include energy giving foods such as starches, oil and fats, legumes, root vegetables to provide energy to the body.
  • Small amounts of body building foods in at least two meals a day should include dairy and proteins such as red meat, chicken, pork and fish, peanut butter and dhal to help build and repair the body.
